Abstract


Toxic relationship is a form of interpersonal relationship that has a destructive impact on individuals' psychological, physical, and social conditions, with university students, as members of the early adulthood group, being particularly vulnerable to it, as reflected in the rise of dating violence cases in North Sumatra from 4,026 cases in 2021 to 5,465 cases in 2024. This study aims to analyze the impact of toxic relationships on behavioral change among students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FISIP USU), using a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, through in-depth interviews and observation of one key informant, five primary informants, and three additional informants. The results show that all primary informants experienced psychological abuse, two experienced physical abuse, and one experienced sexual abuse, with impacts spanning psychological aspects (anxiety, decreased concentration, mental breakdown), physical aspects (injuries from abuse, self-harming behavior), and social aspects (isolation, restricted socialization, decreased campus involvement). The process of behavioral change was analyzed using the Transtheoretical Model, which consists of six stages, with three informants reaching the action to termination stages, while the remaining two were still at the contemplation stage. This study concludes that social support from close ones is the most crucial factor in driving behavioral change among students experiencing toxic relationships.
