Abstract
Household waste problems in residential areas are related not only to waste volume but also to mixed disposal practices, limited source separation, and the absence of a simple community-based management mechanism. The “BASA: Babakan Asem Sadar Sampah” community service program was implemented by students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang in Babakan Asem Village, Teluknaga District, Tangerang Regency. The program aimed to build awareness, practical skills, and an initial local institution for household waste management through a simple waste bank. A participatory approach was applied through environmental observation, coordination with village and neighborhood authorities, participant registration, education, waste-sorting training, preparation of administrative tools, weighing and recording practice, introduction to sales mechanisms with waste collectors, and evaluation followed by program handover. The activity resulted in waste-management education and sorting practice, a simple waste-bank administration system, customer records and savings books, waste weighing activities, the formation of local managers, and a sustainability plan. Community responses indicated improved understanding of clean and dry recyclables, economically valuable waste categories, and the benefits of waste banks. Program continuity requires a fixed weighing schedule, stronger local management, village-government support, gradual membership expansion, and consistent partnerships with waste collectors.
