Abstract


Household organic waste remains a significant environmental challenge that requires active community involvement in waste management at the source. Organic waste, such as fruit peels, vegetable residues, and other household organic materials, has the potential to be processed into value-added products, one of which is eco-enzyme. Eco-enzyme is a liquid product produced through the fermentation of organic materials, a sugar source, and water, and has been developed as an alternative approach to organic waste utilization. This Community Service Program aimed to improve community knowledge and skills in organic waste management through the GERAK ECO (Community Education and Action Movement through Eco-Enzyme) program. The activity was conducted in Kayu Agung Village, Tangerang Regency, in July 2026, involving 23 participants. The program employed an educational and participatory approach consisting of problem identification, a pre-test, education on waste management and the 3R principles (reduce, reuse, and recycle), demonstrations, hands-on eco-enzyme production, fermentation process mentoring, and evaluation through a post-test and skills observation. The results showed that 88% of participants demonstrated an improvement in knowledge, while 65% were able to demonstrate skills in waste segregation and eco-enzyme production. The combination of educational activities and hands-on practice encouraged active community participation and enhanced participants' understanding of organic waste utilization. The GERAK ECO program has the potential to serve as a community empowerment strategy to promote source-based waste management and more sustainable environmental practices.
